The Best Montessori Summer Activities

Wed, 05/16/2018 - 12:17pm -- editor

We all look forward to summer. The children are home, the sun shines all day, and the world is in full bloom. If you are wondering what you can do to combine learning and summer fun, look no further!  Learning doesn’t need to stop during the summer. Longer days and more free time set the perfect tone for natural exploration, Montessori-style.

Here are a few of our favorite Montessori activities geared towards preschool age children that you can add to your summer activities today….

Grow a Garden

It is vital to teach children to care for our environment. Gardening fosters a love and appreciation for nature, as well as develops the atheistic sense.  Children can help plant, water, weed, and pick the fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Gardening is a wonderful way for children to connect with nature and nurture living things. It provides learning opportunities when studying parts of seeds, flowers and plants. Children love to dig in the dirt and get great exercise while doing so.If you don’t have the room for a large garden, a small flower bed or herb garden will do the trick. It is amazing to see a seed become a plant.

Helpful Montessori Tip:

The gardening tools need to be real, not plastic toys, and also the right size for the height of the child.

Have a Picnic

A picnic is not only a fun experience to have with your family, it can also be very educational. The work that goes into a picnic incorporates many Montessori related skills.

Have your child prepare the food. They can wash and cut the fruits and vegetables, and transfer them to bowls. They can make the sandwiches. Have the children be in charge pouring the drinks and laying out the picnic blanket.

Helpful Montessori Tip:

Use this as an opportunity to talk about/focus on courtesy and manners, and the importance of saying please and thank you.

Have a Nature Scavenger Hunt

A fun way to get children moving in nature is to incorporate a scavenger hunt into your playtime.

Enjoy using your imagination to create gross motor challenges together using whatever natural materials you find! Casual, frequent walks in nature provide fun adventures, promote healthy habits, and help to create a stronger bond with your toddler. Regular gross motor exercises are essential for child’s development and contribute to many aspects of their well-being. Gross motor exercises help children learn to move around efficiently, are great for general fitness, help children to comprehend directions, facilitate speech and fine motor development, help children with organization of the body, and assist children to be aware of body positioning and space.

Helpful Montessori Tip:

Use an empty egg carton or a paper bag to collect small natural treasures into. Print your scavenger hunt list (there are some fantastic free printables found online!), glue it to the top of an egg carton or on the outside of paper bag and off you go on your adventure.
